Over 70 dead in South Africa as protests erupt after Jacob Zuma’s arrest

The imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma has unleashed mayhem in South Africa: shopping malls, buildings, and cars have been set on fire; major roads have been blocked; gunshots and explosions can be heard throughout major cities; all forcing Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, to deploy the national army to quell the violence.

At least 72 people have been killed and more than 1,000 have been arrested amid ongoing clashes between protesters and police, with officials saying demonstrators are engaging in looting and violence.
